Bengaluru: Even as a controversy surrounding naming of a circle in Huliyur in honour of 16th century saint-poet Kanakadasa, involving Law Minister J.C. Madhuswamy, was resolved amicably, another statement made by the minister at a public event over efficiency of judges has proved costly for the state government.
A division bench, headed by Justice Aravind Kumar, imposed a cost of Rs 10,000 on the government for seeking more time to file objections in the matter.
The court had initially imposed Rs 1 lakh as cost, but after the government advocate prayed, the court reduced it to Rs 10,000. Earlier, the court was unhappy with the statement by Mr Madhuswamy at a recent public event that the government’s cases were delayed because judges adjourn the cases repeatedly.
The court observed that the courts never adjourned matters but advocates often sought postponement. It said that the minister should be aware of such facts before making any statement on the efficiency of judges.
The court was hearing a matter pertaining to a petition over EWS Quarters and the state government was to file its objections, but sought one more week on Friday.
The court then made the observations and imposed the cost which has to be paid from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
