Tamil Nadu Governor heading to Fort St George?
Chennai: Is a chamber getting ready at the Fort St.George for Governor Banwarilal Purohit to help him with a ringside view of the state administration? Informed sources at the secretariat insist that indeed this is the case.
The pro-active Governor, who is already a hero at even remote teashop discourses with people acknowledging he's onto a cleaning up mission in the scam-soaked state, is likely to move into a formal office at the Secretariat in the first week of December, sources said.
“Nothing has been officially stated, yet. The Governor's chamber has been there for years just next to that of the Chief Minister. This is now being renovated and we have been told to hand it over by November 29”, said a senior official overseeing the work. “December 1 is an auspicious Friday”, he added, with a broad smile.
Governor Purohit has been in news with his review meetings while on a trip to Coimbatore about a week ago. While the opposition leaders cried foul, accusing him of violating Constitution and hurting State autonomy, the common man seemed to like what he saw - a Governor stepping out of his cozy Raj Bhavan comfort to undertake the hard the task of cleaning up the system. “The State which functions well and is delivering good to the people need not be afraid of losing its autonomy just because the Governor is scrutinising its work”, says noted rights lawyer Sudha Ramalingam.
“We have seen the Governors in the past merely cutting ribbons and making convocation speeches. It's heartening to find this Governor trying to make administrators accountable. This is a good beginning”, she adds, reflecting the general public mood.
Sources said the Governor held an hour-long meeting Tuesday evening with some senior officials at the Raj Bhavan. Details are not known.
