Puducherry assembly session to begin today

Puducherry: The monsoon session of the territorial assembly will begin on Thursday. The assembly session will be re-convened at 10.45 am. and is likely would be held for a day or two with the House taking up a few bills.

The House is meeting at a time when the Madras high court is hearing a case filed by V. Saminathan, president of the BJP unit and one of the nominated legislators, challenging the Speaker’s order rejecting their nomination.

A division bench consisting of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar will continue to hear the case on Thursday.

This is the first assembly session after the Centre had nominated 3 BJP loyalists to the House against the recommendation of Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy. Congress legislator K. Lakshminarayanan also filed a petition in the high court questioning the nomination of V. Saminathan, BJP treasurer K.G. Shankar and educationist S. Selva Ganapathy to the Assembly.

The session is being convened amidst the ongoing tussle between the elected government and Lt Governor Kiran Bedi. While Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy accuses Ms Bedi for working to destabilize the government by intervening in governance and raising baseless allegations, the Lt Governor continues her attack on government through her Twitter handle and WhatApp messages. This confrontation is likely to lead to heated discussions in the House. Though the Congress party enjoys support from the opposition AIADMK on the nominated MLA issue and the intervention of Lt Governor in day-to-day affairs of governance, the AIADMK will join hands with the AINRC in raising the issues of implementation of welfare schemes, financial issues and law and order.
