Kerala: Out of state varsities flout rules

However, boards and offices of other universities, including prominent universities like Madurai Kamaraj are still open in the state.

Kozhikode: Other state universities, not on the list of UGC Distance Education Bureau, are running classes and conducting examinations in the state. When enquired, the officials said they are not aware of the present status of courses and had not blocked courses since students are already enrolled. They added that they do not want to disturb the existing batches of students and hopefully they would enter the list of ‘qualified universities’ soon.

According to the list of universities published by the Distance Education Bureau of University Grants Commission, from Tamil Nadu, only five universities are there in the approved list. They are: Tamil Nadu Open University, Tamil University, Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Mother Teresa Women’s University and Sastra University. However, boards and offices of other universities, including prominent universities like Madurai Kamaraj University are still open in the state.

When this newspaper enquired about the procedure to join the varsity, they said that seats are still lying vacant and they are running post-graduate courses also. Another study centre informed that they were not aware of the new list published by the Distance Education Bureau and admitted that they conduct examinations also at the centre in Kozhikode. It is to be recalled that according to the regulation of the UGC, a university established or incorporated by or under a state Act, shall operate only within the territorial jurisdictions allotted to it under its Act and in no case beyond the territory of the state of its location.
