Hyderabad: Stress on social media to promote women's safety

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is one of the eight metros chosen by the Union home ministry for the implementation of plans to improve women’s safety.

The Centre has taken cues from initiatives such as She Teams, the Hawkeye mobile app, and the Bharosa Programme.

Steps taken by the police and civic bodies of the metropolitan cities to promote women’s safety were reviewed at the meeting.

Issues such as reservations for women in the police, the installation of CCTV cameras, deployment of women to police stations, the establishment of emergency response systems, police verification of public transport, prevention of cybercrime, mapping of dark spots and crime-prone areas, and the involvement of educational institutions were discussed.

The initiatives that have been implemented to improve women’s safety include the Himmat app, the All-Woman Patrol Van, and the Shishtachar Programme of the Delhi Police; She Teams, the Hawkeye app, and the Bharosa Programme of the Hyderabad Police; the Suraksha app of the Bengaluru Police; and the Power Angels of the UP Police.
