Child enrolment, corrections soon at all Akshayas in Kerala

State decides to provide biometric fingerprint device and tabs to all centres.

Thiruvananthapuram: All the 2654 Akshaya centres across the state will offer Aadhaar enrolment facility for children and correction services.

The new initiative as part of the 15th-anniversary celebrations of the Akshaya e-literacy project comes as a relief to parents of children below five years, which is now limited only to 875 centres.

There were widespread complaints that many centres were reluctant towards child enrolment as charges they receive is very low.

According to an official statement, it was decided to provide biometric fingerprint device and tabs to all of them so that they could undertake child enrolment as well as corrections on existing cards.

However, new enrolment facility for those above five would be limited only to around 750 centres.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan would formally launch the initiative at the Akshaya Day celebrations on Thursday which will witness special camps at all district hospitals for enrolment of newborns.

Similar camps will be there twice every week and extended to other hospitals in a phased manner.

Mr Vijayan will also launch a toll-free number for enquiries and complaints about these e-service centres.

Financial assistance to Akshaya entrepreneurs belonging to SC and ST communities for purchasing the Aadhaar enrolment kit would also be distributed.
