After Mid Manair, KLI dam in Siddipet springs leakage

The water in the reservoir is at dead storage level because it has not received inflows from the Mid Manair dam.

Medak: The Ranganayaksagar (RNS) reservoir situated in erstwhile Medak district sprang a leak on Tuesday morning. The RNS is part of the prestigious Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme (KLIS).

The water in the reservoir is at dead storage level because it has not received inflows from the Mid Manair dam. Yet, due to the alleged poor quality of construction of the bund, the leak was spotted on Tuesday.

One month ago, when a wet run was conducted by lifting water from the third heavy duty motor pump-set at Gayatri Pump House, the slab collapsed. A few days ago, water leakage occurred from the Mid Manair dam.

The reservoir, which is located in Chandlapur in Chinnakodur mandal of Siddipet district, was constructed on 2,176 acres of land, at a cost of `463 crore under KLIS, and can store 3 tmc ft of water. The reservoir bund is 8.65 km long, six metres wide and 32.63 metres high. At the ground level, it is about 196 metres wide.

The RNS, Komuravelli Mallannasagar and Konda Pochamma reservoirs were constructed under Package 6 of the KLIS.

The objective was to irrigate 1.1 lakh acres of land and supply drinking water to the erstwhile Medak district.

Godavari water lifted from Medigadda at Kaleshwaram is supplied to the Yellampalli reservoir and then to the Mid-Manair dam from where it is supplied to the RNS reservoir.
