Madras HC accepts Raja's apology, closes case

\"I went very emotional when I was arguing with the police personnel. I accidently uttered certain words.

Chennai: BJP national secretary H. Raja appeared before the Madras high court on Monday and tendered an unconditional apology for his alleged derogatory remarks against the judiciary. Recording his apology and taking his affidavit on record, a division bench comprising Justices C.T. Selvam and M.Nirmal Kumar closed the suo motu contempt proceedings initiated by them against him.

The bench said in its order, “The majesty of law lies in its magnanimity. Contemnor is present before this court. He has filed an affidavit. Recording the apology of contemnor informed in his affidavit dated October 22, 2018 this contempt petition shall stand closed. Contemnor’s affidavit shall form part of the records”.

In his affidavit filed through advocate B.Rabu Manohar, Raja had stated that on September 15 he went to Pudukottai district for a Vinayaka Chathurthi function. Though the installation of Vinayaka idol was not permitted by the police, the Madurai Bench of the Madras high court had permitted the function. On his arrival, he was informed that the police have refused to permit the procession of Vinayaka idol at the instance of a church located nearby and the Inspector of Police was playing a partisan role, he added.

"I went very emotional when I was arguing with the police personnel. I accidently uttered certain words. The utterance of the words, which have said to have given rise to the petition (though the so -called words are not mentioned in the order) is not an intentional one, but was uttered in an extremely agitated state of mind. I realised the mistake only when I saw the video. I respectfully submit that the said utterances were not intentional or deliberate and I unconditionally apologise for uttering the said words", he added.
