Telangana: Teachers never shown the door

District educational officers in Telangana claimed that termination of government teachers is rare.

Hyderabad: All it takes is a transfer or a six-month suspension to remove the blot on a teacher. The transfer of Neeraj Batra, the suspended principal of Ryan International School, to another branch of the school in Gurgaon has shocked parents across the nation.

District educational officers in Telangana claimed that termination of government teachers is rare.

Usha Rani, district educational officer of Mechal, said, “Government teachers face loss of increment for three years and a departmental enquiry. I have never come across a termination case. The suspension will be valid for three to six months.”

Most cases against teachers are related to negligence of duty and corporal punishments. There have also been cases of teachers charged with sexual assault.

“In case of a sexual assault, a departmental enquiry is held and legal proceedings are conducted. But the teacher can still resume charge when released. Even in extreme cases, termination is not considered,” said a district educational officer. Private school teachers are transferred to other branches.

“Teachers are terminated in private schools but we also hear about transfers,” said Ms Usha Rani.

In case of private schools, educational department said that its hands are tied. The complaints by parents are dealt with by the school management itself.
