Telangana: Muslim scholars red flag clauses in marriage Act

The meeting decided to place the objections before the government and suggest a few amendments in the draft.

Hyderabad: A group of Muslim scholars and intelligentsia on Sunday demanded that the State government take the community into confidence before passing any ordinance pertaining to the marriage of foreign nationals with local Muslim girls.

At a meeting organised here on Sunday they said that the minorities welfare department had incorporated certain clause in the proposed draft which amounted to interference in the Shariat (Islamic law). “It is unacceptable,” said Maulana Syed Mustaq Malik of Tehreek-e-Muslim Shabaan.

The clauses which stated that Rs 10 lakh should be deposited in the name of the girl and that an official of the minority welfare department and the police should be present at the marriage was not welcome, said Mr M.A. Khadeer, a social activist.

The meeting decided to place the objections before the government and suggest a few amendments in the draft.

The police had recently arrested about a dozen foreign nationals who had come to the city to marry minor girls. The police had also rounded up qazis who were solemnising the marriages and indulging in human trafficking.
