Mosquitoes breed on rain water
Hyderabad: Due to incessant rain, open plots in Yapral, AS Rao Nagar, RK Puram, Old Bowenpally, Kompally and Alwal are still filled with water, which has turned completely green and is allowing breeding of mosquitoes.
Mr R. Raghu, a senior resident in Yapral, said, “The mosquito problem is so intense that five persons contracted dengue in the past week. Constant calls to the GHMC complaints cell to take up control measures have failed to evoke action. The machine required for fogging is not available.”
In Alwal, locals have begun dumping garbage in the inundated plots. Mss Savita K. of Old Alwal said, “This has become a major menace as people think these are gutters and dump their waste. It is not possible to keep a watch round the clock.”
Residents state water in the plastic bags allow mosquitoes to breed easily, and spraying even if done by private individuals, is not effective.
Mr Rama Krishna, who stays near the Trimulgherry junction, explained, “The graveyards along the main roads have been converted into dump yards. There are no compound walls. Not only is there a stench but also the problem of mosquitoes.”
District medical and health officials do not have data on the number of dengue cases. Dr S. Krishna, senior paediatrician, said, “Earlier viral fevers where the first on our list of diagnosis. This year, we first evaluate a patient for dengue as every fifth case is that of low grade dengue fever.”
