CHENNAI: Fulfilling the poll promise of increasing four grams of gold under the marriage assistance scheme to eight grams, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Thursday presented eight grams of gold each for mangalsutra to 12,500 couples.
As a token of the assistance for all the couples, she presented gold coins for five of the 12,500 beneficiaries, an official press release here said. The five beneficiaries belong to the Chief Minister’s constituency of R.K Nagar and Kancheepuram district. The couples who received the gold for mangal sutra thanked the CM. The government had allocated Rs 204 crore for the gold for mangalsutra scheme for the year 2016-17. The 1,250 couples who had registered their names after 23 May 2016 would be benefit from the eight gram gold scheme.
