Fresh rain spells in Ooty, Gudalur uproot trees

The residents there wanted immediate action to remove all the fallen trees in and around the human settlements there.

OOTY: Fresh spell of rains which rocked Ooty suburbs and Gudalur region in Nilgiris border, uprooted trees at Pykara area along Ooty-Gudalur road and damaged a carrot-cleaning-cum-grading unit. The residents there wanted immediate action to remove all the fallen trees in and around the human settlements there.

Nearly after a ten-day gap, incidents of trees being uprooted were reported in Nilgiris due to the sudden spells in early hours of Thursday.

The rains and winds which were particularly heavy along the Pykara-TR Bazaar-Naduvattam sector near Gudalur uprooted two huge pine trees at Punitha Nagar limits in Pykara, damaging a carrot-cleaning-cum grading unit there. Ms. Aarthi, a resident at Punitha Nagar in Pykara said, though the residents there pleaded with the officials concerned to remove all the dangerous trees in and around the human settlements there, after the recent heavy rains that rocked Nilgiris, the officials only turned a deaf ear to the complaint.

Now, the tress which lost their strength due to damage to the sub-soil stability in the area due to the continuing wet spell, began to wreck havoc. The Nilgiris district administration should immediately pass necessary order to remove all the 'dangerous trees' in Punitha Nagar limits in Pykara, she added.
