Chennai: Underground metro footfalls shoot up
Chennai: City’s first underground metro corridor connecting Koyambedu with Nehru Park has become instant hit with people of Chennai as the footfall of the Chennai metro doubled after its inauguration. The average footfall shot up from 12,000 to 24,000 per day.
“With the footfall increased the revenue. While the earnings up to May 13, 2017 stand at Rs 27.72 crore, after opening the underground stretch, we earned Rs 7.92 crore in these three months,” said an official of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) adding that 95.87 lakh commuted in metro from June 2015 to July 2017.
With the inauguration of underground metro rail, which resulted in better connectivity, people residing in Poonamallee high road, Anna Nagar and Kilpauk found it comfortable to take the metro, as there is also no local train station nearby.
“Initially, when there were strikes, we had to opt for autos or cabs that charge exorbitantly. Now, the metro facility has saved us from shelling out extra cash,” says Palak Mishra, a commuter.
