Chennai: From September 1, all motorists must carry their original license with them, photocopy will not be accepted, said transport minister M.R.Vijayabhaskar at a press meet on Tuesday. "When licenses of commuters were temporarily suspended for flouting traffic norms in the past, they escaped policemen showing a xerox. This move is to improve road safety," he said.
According to him, from January to July 2017, 3,244 accidents were reduced and 309 deaths prevented. A total of 9,500 licenses have been suspended temporarily. Government plans to initiate more measures to decrease death rates in the second half of the year.
When asked about rainwater entering buses due to their poor condition, he was quick to say that all buses will get a facelift within 15 days. Moreover, a tender has been floated to introduce more buses after the given target of 2,000 new buses is met.
After the meet, he also inspected an electric bus and went on a trial run. The transport minister said that Chennai would get its first electric bus this year.
