Flood situation turns grim in old Adilabad

Road connectivity has been affected in many villages while some roads were breached

Adilabad: The flood situation has turned grim with incessant rains lashing old Adilabad district for the past 36 hours. Road connectivity has been affected in many villages while some roads were breached.

Several irrigation projects, streams and rivulets are flowing high with flood water compelling officials to lift all the gates to divert water downstream from the SRSP, Yellampalli, Sathnala, Komaram Bheem, Swarna, and Kadam projects.

Meanwhile, villagers on the banks of Penganga, Pranahitha and Godavari face the threat of inundation even as flood water entered their houses. Officials sounded the alert to people living in low-lying areas and on the banks of rivers.

It was seen people were catching fish on the roads that were washed away to shore in the Manjulapur colony from the tanks overflowing in Nirmal town. The same is the case with the Bhagyanagar tank that was overflowing and fishes are coming out with the floodwater from the tank and people are catching the fish.

Some enthusiasts threw nets in the floodwater to catch fish on the roads adjacent to the tank in Nirmal town. Floodwater inundated hundreds of low-lying areas in old Adilabad district and many people, including police personnel on duty, were stranded.

Many colonies were inundated in Nirmal and Minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy inspected the flood situation by personally visiting the affected localities.

The highest rainfall of 24.7 cm was recorded in Dilawarpur while it was 24.5 cm in Narsapur (G) in the last 24 hours. Local people and rescue teams saved a lactating woman and a 11-day baby from the floods in GNR colony in Nirmal.

Traffic came to halt on NH-44 and vehicles were stranded on both sides for long distances. Gaddennavagu canal beached and flood water entered downstream. Nearly 40 families located in low-lying areas were left stranded in Autonagar, Bhainsa.

Forest and police officials did not allow visitors to the Kuntala and Pochera waterfalls as they posed danger. Both waterfalls were in spate due to heavy rains upstream in Maharashtra.

Reportedly, many residents tweeted SOS messages to ministers in and around Nirmal.
