THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University College re-opened on Monday after ten days of closure after violence. Classes for first-year degree courses also started.

Ending the SFI hegemony, the day also witnessed the KSU forming its unit on campus after 18 years. Soon, clashes erupted in front of the secretariat and the college.

Students and teachers were permitted to enter the campus only after the police checking their identity cards. The principal said this procedure would continue every day.

A large contingent of police has been deployed in the college.

KSU president Abhijith announced the formation of the unit at his hunger strike venue before the secretariat seeking a probe on the violent incidents and cheating in exams. Amal Chandran is the president of the unit, Arya S. Nair the vice-president, S. Achuth the secretary, Aishwarya Joseph the joint-secretary, Amal, treasurer, and P. M. Gopan and M. Ishaan the executive members.

The office-bearers told reporters that the majority of the party supporters are scared to come forward and they are ready to work if a unit is formed.

The University College was the venue of student protest when SFI leaders stabbed one of its members, Akhil Chandran, which was a major embarrassment for the CPM leadership.
