Bengaluru: Extortionist rowdy attacks policeman, shot at, arrested

According to the police, Anil was arrested six months ago for extortion.

Bengaluru: A rowdy sheeter was shot at and arrested by the Chamarajpet police when he assaulted the police in a bid to escape late on Sunday night.

The rowdy has been identified as Anil (38), a resident of Giripura in Cottonpet. Anil is a rowdy sheeter in Cottonpet police station and is involved in 14 criminal cases including murder, robbery and attempt to murder in Cottonpet, Koramangala, Parappana Agrahara and Chamarajpet police stations. According to the police, Anil was arrested six months ago for extortion. He was recently released but that did not stop his activities. He was extorting money from shop owners and assaulting those refusing to pay him.

Though no one approached the police to complain about the excess, Chamarajpet police were looking for him in an assault and robbery case. The police late on Sunday night received information about the movement of Anil in Cottonpet.

Chamarajpet Inspector Kumarswamy along with his staff rushed to the spot. As constable Chandrasekhar went to arrest him, Anil assaulted him with a sharp weapon trying to escape. Inspector Kumarswamy opened fire at Anil to bring the situation under control and took him into custody. He was rushed to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Constable Chandrasekhar who sustained minor injuries in the assault was also treated at the same hospital.
