Hyderabad: Pothole claims another life as death toll hits five
Hyderabad: A 25-year-old man who was preparing for the Civil Services examination died after his bike hit a road divider while trying to avoid a pothole at Ameerpet late on Saturday night.
The incident comes just a couple of days after the Supreme Court took a stern view of pothole deaths. This is the fifth death that can be attributed to potholes since June 1.
According to Punjagutta sub-inspector G. Venkateshwarlu, the deceased, Mahanthi, went to visit his friend Venu in Begumpet and was on his way back home at around 11 pm when the accident happened.
“When Mahanthi, who was riding the bike with friend Nitin riding pillion, reached near Lal Bungalow turning leading to Ameerpet, there was a pothole right in front of Subway store. To avoid bumping into the pothole, Mahanthi turned his vehicle and since he was riding at high speed, he ended up hitting the divider,” said sub inspector Venkateshwarlu.
Mahanthi was riding the bike in a rash manner and is suspected to be drunk at the time of accident, the police said. He was also not wearing a helmet which may have saved his life.
He was rushed to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Nitin, the pillion rider, is undergoing treatment.
A case has been registered at the Punjagutta police station and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
