Karnataka stands fourth in governance indicators: Survey

The report was released here on Saturday by PAC Chairman Dr K. Kasturirangan.

Bengaluru: Kerala and Tamil Nadu once again secured first and second rankings for the second year in a row, while Karnataka was ranked fourth in governance indicators as per the public affairs index (PAI) among larger states. Telangana secured third place.

Among smaller states, with population less than two crore, Himachal Pradesh and Goa retained first and second place for the second consecutive year. Public Affairs Centre (PAC), a Bengaluru based think tank, had come up with PAI to rank governance in states by using data available in the public domain in key areas of governance.

The report was released here on Saturday by PAC Chairman Dr K. Kasturirangan.

The PAI survey was based on 10 themes, 30 focus subjects and 100 indicators. For the first time Children of India was introduced as a chapter.

PAC Director G. Gurucharan said, "This is to build a scientific, sustainable and reliable model for developing data-base. The slip in the ranking is not based on the state not performing well, rather because other states have been performing better comparing to other states.”

He pointed out that though Karnataka has ranked low in some indicators, but it has showed continuous improvement in Environment, Transparency and Accountability to jump from second rank to first.
