Telangana: Open defecation in 38 urban areas

The government has told these urban bodies to meet the norm by August 15.

Hyderabad: After a high voltage campaign under Swachh Bharat to make the state open defecation free, 19 urban local bodies have met the norm. Another 38 urban local bodies still have to catch up.

The highest percentage of open defecation in urban areas was in the districts of Adilabad (25.87 per cent), Mahbubnagar (19.37) and Nalgonda. It is also higher than the state average of 8.68 per cent.

Along with Warangal and Karimnagar, these five districts constitute 62.49 per cent households defecating in the open across urban areas.

Out of 73 urban local bodies including GHMC, Manuguru municipality of Khammam district stands at the top with 36.66 per cent households defecating in open.

Under Swachh Bharat the government has taken up construction of toilets and 90 per cent was completed. In Kagaznagar municipality 26.23 per cent households defecated in the open and construction of toilets for 70 per cent was complete.

The state government has identified 2,14,306 beneficiaries and 1, 50, 592 applications were approved. In this construction of 1,14,552 toilets is complete.

For the construction of individual household toilets the Centre provides Rs 4,000 and state Rs 8,000 for each household to build the toilet.
