Martin Luther King III exhorts Dalits: Unite, speak up
Bengaluru: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. If Dalit atrocities remain a silent issue, the community will continue to be oppressed,” said Martin Luther King III, addressing the media at Dr Ambedkar International Conference.
Martin Luther King III, the oldest child of Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr, said,”If a leader is silent on issues, in a few years down the line, a new leader and government will be elected. Such conferences mobilise the Dalit community and progressives, forcing the present government to address the movement.”
When pointed out that unlike the Black movement led by his father Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalit movement does not have a coalition or a face, he said, “In my father’s time, the blacks, whites, Jews, religious groups all came together to fight injustice. That is what made the government address the issue. The Indians with higher socio-economic status must also engage in the Dalit struggle”.
