Kerala: Literacy mission focuses on migrant labour workforce
KOCHI: Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority is ushering in another revolution by spreading literacy among the migrant labour workforce in the state. Perumbavoor where there are a lot of migrant workers has been identified as the launch pad and the migrants are set to be made literate in the twin languages of Malayalam and Hindi. The preliminary works in this regard have been completed and the first ‘preveshanotsavam’ will be held on August 15. This will be the major work in the sector after the State Total Literacy Mission nearly three decades ago.
All wards in Perumbavoor Municipality will host organising committee meetings before July 27. Friendly meets of those residing nearby also will be held near the study centres. The preparations for the classes will be made from August 6. The registration of students for each study centre will be done before August 13. The classes will start on August 15. The campaign will be carried out for four months during which the aim is to make the migrant labourers totally literate in these two subjects. Classes will be held for five hours each week. Each study centre will have sub-centres having 15 to 20 students. There will be 5 to 10 such sub-centres under each study centre. There will be an instructor in each sub centre. Eligible migrant labourers will be used as instructors.
The subcentres include libraries, schools and other institutions, labour centres and migrant shelters. A workshop in this connection was held at the Perumbavoor Municipal Hall on Saturday which was inaugurated by Dr P. S. Sreekala, director, Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority.
