Kerala: Hindu Matha draws flak over priest issue

SNDP Yogam Mavelikara Union protests.

ALAPPUZHA: The SNDP Yogam Mavelikara Union organised a dharna on Saturday in front of Chettikulanagara temple in protest against the resolution passed by the Hindu Matha Convention, a devotee-group, disapproving of the appointment of a non-Brahmin as sub-priest of the temple. Mr Suresh Babu, secretary, SNDP Yogam Mavelikara union, who inaugurated the protest meeting, said that the Yogam would protect the right of the priest to do his job at the temple.

Apart from SNDP Yogam, Hindu Aikya Vedi and CPM local committee also protested against the Hindu Matha Convention. Mr Sudhikumar, Palazhi, Cheravally near Kayamkulam, who has been serving as priest for the last 12 years in various temples under the TDB, was transferred on June 14 and asked to join Chettikulangara temple by July 1. But he continues to serve at Puthiyidam temple as the transfer order was kept in abeyance by the TDB.

The issue became controversial after the Hindu Matha Convention passed a resolution on June 30 saying that the temple required no non-Brahmin priest. A copy of the resolution was given to Devaswom Commissioner C. P. Rama Raja Prema Prasad. The issue came to the fore after Kannamangalam south kara revolted against the resolution passed by all 38 members of the convention.
