Karnataka must protect Roopa Moudgil: Ex-DGP Sri Kumar

Mr Sri Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that irregularities have been occurring inside state prisons for a long time.

Bengaluru: DIG D. Roopa, who was recently transferred from the prisons department to road safety wing of the state police, got a strong support from none other than former central vigilance commissioner and former DG&IGP R. Sri Kumar, who cracked the stamp paper scam involving Abdul Karim Telgi.

Telgi, along with AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala, was in the middle of a controversy recently over special treatment at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.

Mr Sri Kumar told Deccan Chronicle that irregularities have been occurring inside state prisons for a long time. “What Roopa exposed is just a tip of the iceberg,” he said.

Unlike a few retired top police officers, who questioned Roopa for her damning reports, Mr Sri Kumar described her as a “whistle blower” and said that she should be given security under the whistle blower protection programme.

He said, “Do we have a whistle blower protection mechanism in Karnataka? Ms Roopa came across a lot of irregularities when she visited the jail. She saw Sasikala and Telgi getting very high facilities. So, she put it in writing and gave it to her boss seeking action. Why transfer her? She should be given whistle blower protection. Have you (government ) given it? No.”
