Telangana stops registration of flats to recover dues

The builders agreed to clear the dues soon and urged the government to allow registration of properties.

Hyderabad: People who have bought flats or houses in joint venture housing projects in the city taken up by government’s housing board and private real estate developers will have to wait for some more time to get the properties registered in their names.

The TS government on Friday made it clear that registration of properties in these projects will be allowed only after the developers clear all the arrears they owe to the government.

About 19 JV projects were allowed by the previous Congress government in undivided AP, of which a majority are still incomplete.

The builders are liable to pay revenue share and various taxes to the government as per JV norms, but have so far failed to do so.

With this, the government had kept the registration of these properties on hold.On Friday, the Cabinet subcommittee comprising housing minister A. Indrakaran Reddy and transport minister P. Mahender Reddy constituted by the government to resolve JV projects issue, met at Secretariat. It held talks with builders to resolve the issue amicably.

The builders agreed to clear the dues soon and urged the government to allow registration of properties. However, the subcommittee said that the registrations will be allowed only after the dues are cleared.

“Our intention is not to trouble buyers, but the builders owe crores of rupees to the government. Even after selling the flats/ houses, they failed to pay the revenue share and taxes to the government as per JV norms for the last five to ten years. If we allow registration of properties at this stage, it would be even more difficult to recover the dues. Now they are under pressure from buyers for registration,” Mr Indrakaran Reddy said.

He added that a few of projects are yet to take off even after allotment of land.
“We will resume such lands from those who failed to ground the projects. These costly lands located in prime areas of city could be utilised for public use,” he said.
