Hindu families in Aligarh want to leave city after communal clash

The families have put up items for sale and are asking the administration to buy their houses and property.

27 Hindu families in Aligarh have claimed that they feel threatened following a clash between the two communities in the area on Wednesday night, after a 19-year-old newly married Hindu woman was allegedly molested by four Muslim youths.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Hindu families have asked the district administration to buy their houses and shops in Babri Mandi area of Aligarh, and also put up ‘on sale’ posters in the area, so that they can leave the city.

The woman who was molested alleged that she and her husband were on their way home when the youths molested her and tried to drag her to a secluded lane. When the woman shouted for help, people of Hindu and Muslim gathered outside, leading to a clash.

Some youth fired shots in the air, while a few allegedly tried to attack the woman’s husband with a knife. The situation was brought under control by the police.

An FIR was filed against the four youths — Nadeem, Suheil, Ismail and Danish — on charges of outraging modesty. Nadeem has been arrested while the others are absconding, said the report.

Some Hindu groups and BJP leaders protested outside the police station and collectorate on Thursday, demanding the immediate arrest of all accused.
Aligarh Mayor and BJP leader Shakuntala Bharti said: “Our women cannot walk on the road. Only one accused, who surrendered, has been arrested. We will continue our protests till all the accused are arrested.”

Police have filed FIRs against people from both communities.
