Plastic in marriage halls: BBMP to crack the whip
Bengaluru: The BBMP is planning to enforce stringent rules at the wedding halls to ensure that they use environment friendly utensils and avoid use of plastic.
The civic body has already placed rules asking the wedding halls to avoid plastic bottles, cups and plates, yet the violation still continues. The BBMP commissioner too has met NGT chairman and chalked out plans to come up with more stringent steps to avoid use of plastic. A senior officer from the BBMP said, “Despite issuing rules and asking the wedding halls to use plate and steel glass banks, yet there is blatant violation at these venues, as they are using plastic items rampantly. In 2018, we had issued circular to all the marriage halls asking them to have sufficient plates and glass made of steel or ceramic or any other material other than plastic. But we are still finding huge amount of plastic waste generated from these marriage halls. The same circular was also issued to places where mass food is served but it is in vain.”
“Recently, the BBMP commissioner has met the chairman of NGT and have discussed about ways to curb the menace of plastic. We are also thinking about proposing few ideas to the commissioner about cancellation of licence of these wedding halls and other venues if they continue using plastic. We will also want to carry out special drives to check if there is plate bank in place,” added the officer.
