Mobile phone, ganja in Kannur, Viyur jails
KOZHIKODE: The killers of rebel Marxist leader T.P. Chandrasekharan serving life still enjoy a luxurious life in prison, a wee hour swoop revealed on Saturday.
Acting on reports of ‘privileged’ inmates enjo-ying bribing guards on duty, DGP (Prisons) Rish-iraj Singh himself led the raids on Kannur Central Jail. Started around 4 am, they unearthed embarrassing luxuries including sachets of ganja, mobile phones and extra batteries, money hidden under coats, iron rods, SIM cards and even a radio.
Northern Range IG Ashok Yadav and Kannur SP Pratheesh Kumar accompanied Mr Singh, leading some 150 officers.
Utmost secrecy was kept to avoid shifting the stuff from prison cells. The officials were in the dark about the operation.
At Viyyur, Thrissur city police commissioner Yatish Chandra led the pre-dawn operation. They seized two smartphones from Mohammed Shafi, undergoing life imprisonment for killing T.P. Chandrasekharan. Mobi-le phones were recovered from his possession in 2014 and 2017.
The department is planning to shift him to Poo-jappura Central Prison in the state capital, Mr Singh said. “It is clear that the prison officials extended adequate support to the inmates to have all these luxuries during detention,” he said.
