Kerala plans big for Thrissur heritage museum

Facility to showcase Kerala's history and heritage, says minister.

Thrissur: The Kerala government is planning to develop the district heritage museum in Thrissur as a major facility to showcase the state's diverse history and heritage. Mr Ramachandran Kadannappally, Minister of Ports, Museums, Archaeology and Archives, who inaugurated the renovated museum at Chembukkavu here, said that the land which will be available once the zoological park here is shifted to Puthoor would be used for developing the museum.

"We are working out plans for a mega project. It will help inculcate in the minds of younger generation a sense of value about our culture and heritage," he noted. The renovation of the museum was carried out in tune with the government's policy to make museums in the state disabled-friendly, he said. The museum was opened to the public after the completion of the second phase of renovation. A total of Rs 3. 96 lakh has been spent to renovate the structure and its premises.

Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar, who presided, lauded the efforts taken by the state archives department to preserve the regional history and heritage. The palace, where the museum was housed, was renovated in such a way that it would help any visitor to understand the heritage of the state, he said. "The museum will not only preserve our culture and heritage but also impart a sense of historical perspective to the people. This will help anybody to understand the culture of Kerala," he added.

The museum, which was opened in 2016, has completed its second phase of renovation with the creation of additional features, including a well-equipped amphitheatre and children's park besides the beautification of the premises. Thrissur mayor Ajitha Jayarajan, director of Kerala state archives department J. Rejikumar, former director, museums and zoos K. Gangadharan, and executive director of Kerala Museum R.
