Cycling to work: DULT project on track

Traffic police team visits proposed sites for the project. Work to be taken up in phases.

Bengaluru: The station level traffic police officers have checked places that were suggested by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) for bicycle parking stands and tracks. They have now given the clearance, but the final no objection will be given by their higher ups.

A police official in one of the traffic police station located in the Central Business District (CBD) area said, “We had received the documents from DULT, which had marked the spots where the cycle stands will be constructed and the proposed cycle tracks. We have visited these spots and have made the necessary observations. The spots and tracks mentioned by DULT were perfect and we have given the clearance. Now the senior officers will have to take a call.”

Another official said, “During our observation, we found that the designated spots for bicycle stands were marked by the DULT only after a detailed study has ensured that the pedestrian and vehicular movements were not affected. The bicycle stand will come up in 10X20 area and does not encroach the pavements. These stands will be designed in such a way that the pedestrians will have ample space to walk.”

“For now, we have no objections and the senior police officers will discuss the observations made by us and take a final call. We are expecting that the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) will kick off soon and we are planning to create an awareness drive among the public.”

The work for the first phase will be carried out in cluster – 1 for example a cycle stand will be coming up at the cross road of Brunton road, 100 feet road Indiranagar, CMH Road, near Vidhana Soudha, Church Street and surrounding areas.
