Telangana: Parking policy being worked out

“If all vehicles are stranded on 9,150 km, the congestion (space between vehicles) will be 2 metres.

Hyderabad: The state will soon get a police on parking of vehicles. A survey conducted by a few agencies stated that the city has 9,150 km of roads and 49 lakh registered vehicles, plus over 2- 3 lakh vehicles from various districts entering the city limits. “If all vehicles are stranded on 9,150 km, the congestion (space between vehicles) will be 2 metres.

GHMC chief Dr B. Janardhan Reddy, “We will face more problems if no strategies are put in place. The state needs a parking policy. With regard to the city, GHMC is looking at different alternatives like increasing public space, using vacant plots as private parking areas. The traffic police is looking at regularising illegal parking lots.”

He said technology would be used to help commuters find parking slots. The draft policy deals with providing parking areas at Hyderabad Metro Rail stations. Parking cannot be provided directly under the stations.”

The policy will be implemented after it is cleared by the Cabinet.
