Tamil Nadu govt to establish bakery units at all central prisons
Chennai: Riding on the success wave of the Prison Bazaar, a unique initiative aimed at facilitating gainful employment to the prisoners, the state government has proposed to establish bakery units at all the central prisons except the Puzhal central jail here.
Winding up the debate on the demand for grants for his department, Law Minister C. Ve. Shanmugam informed the Assembly on Thursday that following the tremendous response to the bakery products at Puzhal prison, “it has been planned to establish bakery units at all the central prison with the blessings of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and on the order of Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.”
Announcing various measures for the prison department, he said a woman shoe making unit would be established at the Vellore central prison to manufacture light weight shoes exclusively for women staff at a cost of Rs 1.26 crore. In addition, a tailoring industry would be set up at the Puzhal central prison for Rs. One crore. He also announced that the district munsif-cum-judicial magistrate court would be constructed at Vanur in Villupuram in the state at a cost of Rs 5.45 crore.
