Currency notes in vault of Chennai Silks found burnt

The locker was on the sixth floor of the building and was recovered from the debris on Thursday afternoon.

Chennai: A cash vault was recovered from the demolished Chennai Silks building in T Nagar on Thursday. However, the currency notes inside have been reduced to ashes, according to a spokesperson of Chennai Silks.

The locker was on the sixth floor of the building and was recovered from the debris on Thursday afternoon. Demolition of the fire-ravaged building, which began on June 2, was completed on Tuesday (June 20) and clearing the debris is underway.

The vault reportedly fell during the demolition work last Saturday when a portion of the building was brought down.

According to the spokesperson, the Chennai Silks management checked the vault after it was secured on Thursday and found the currency notes completely reduced to ashes. Meanwhile, the much-discussed vault — the one containing gold and diamond jewellery — is yet to be retrieved. “There is debris still up to the height of the second floor. The vault is in the basement of the building. It would be until three or four days before we reach the jewellery vault,” according to the management.
