MLAs becoming saleable commodities, says writer Devanur Mahadev

He was commenting on the Cash for vote scam during the recent Rajya Sabha and Council polls.

Bengaluru: Have elected representatives become commodities? This was the fear expressed by noted writer and thinker, Devanur Mahadev on Wednesday while commenting on the Cash for vote scam during the recent Rajya Sabha and Council polls.

Addressing a news conference here, he said poll politics in the state had become disgusting and and what was more nauseating was the fact that legislators had become purchasable commodities. The recent polls had mad people wonder if it was a democratic process or an auction.

With polls losing their sanctity, the time has come to start a new political force as an alternative to Congress, BJP and Janata Dal. In this, regard, a convention will be held in Dharwad next month in which leading personalities including Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan will participate, he said.

Continuing his tirade against political parties, Mr Mahadev said looting seems to have become their main motto. The need of the hour was to do something to cleanse the current political system by involving students and youth. Even agitations had become mechanical with worker organisations controlled by trade unions, he said.

There was no ideology involved in the protests against the dropping of ministers, he said adding that everyone was disgusted with these developments.
