Andhra Pradesh appoints ABV Rao as state Anti-Corruption Bureau boss

Vijayawada: The AP government has appointed Additional DGP A.B. Venkateswara Rao as Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau. He replaces Mr Debabrata Bagchi who was holding full and additional charge.

Chief Secretary L.V. Subrahmanyam on Monday released GO No. 882 appointing Mr Rao as ACB DG.

Mr Rao was removed as Intelligence Director General last month by the Election Commission which asked the government not to assign him any election-related post. He had been kept waiting without any posting since then.

The action followed a complaint lodged by the opposition YSR Congress to the Election Commission that he was working in favour of the ruling Telugu Desam.
His transfer from the Intelligence post was reversed by then chief secretary Anil Chandra Punetha.

The state government moved the High Court which refused to intervene in the orders issued by the Election Commission. The government the removed Mr Rao as Intelligence DG post and kept him waiting.

Mr Kumar Vishwajeet was made Intelligence DG subsequently. Before Mr Bagchi was given full additional charge of the ACB, state DGP R.P. Thakur was holding the post.

It is stated that Mr Punetha was transferred as he did not obey the Election Commi-ssion’s orders with regard to Mr Rao’s transfer.
