Tamil Nadu seeks 3 lakh tonnes of rice from Telangana

On Sunday, Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender held a meeting to discuss the proposal with rice millers.

Hyderabad: Tamil Nadu has requested Telangana to supply three lakh metric tonnes of rice to meet the state’s demand. It has offered to pay Rs 30 more than the minimum support price (MSP) per quintal.

On Sunday, Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender held a meeting to discuss the proposal with rice millers. He said the proposed arrangement would be beneficial to farmers as well as the State Government.

“This year, the government has set itself a target of procuring 35.5 lakh tonnes of paddy at MSP from farmers. Of this, three lakh tonnes will be supplied to Tamil Nadu. The MSP for grade-I paddy is '1,590 per quintal; and for grade-2 paddy, it is '1,550 per quintal. The Tamil Nadu government has offered to pay an additional '30 per quintal,” he said.

This means that Tamil Nadu will pay Rs 1,620 per quintal for grade-1 paddy, and Rs 1,580 per quintal for grade-2 paddy.

Mr Rajender directed officials of the Civil Supplies Department to ensure that all farmers received at least the MSP for their produce. He said that any deviations in prices would invite severe consequences.

He directed officials to make payments to farmers within 48 hours of procurement of produce. He also asked them to credit the amount directly to the farmers’ bank accounts, without the involvement of any middlemen. The Minister warned the rice millers against indulging in irregularities during the milling and transportation of rice.
