Water supply in Telangana may be hit

If allocation to TS from river Krishna was cut, it would be difficult to meet drinking water needs of Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: As water levels sunk in Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar even before peak summer, the sharing of Krishna waters was creating a rift between the two Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Official sources said, “The CM asked Mr Joshi to lodge a strong protest with KRMB and the Centre against the discrimination shown towards Telangana. The CS is expected to write to the Union water resources minister and the Central Water Commission on Friday.”

TS pointed out that the water level in Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar were fast depleting and if allocations to TS were reduced and that to AP raised to levels more than it deserved, it would be difficult to meet drinking water needs of Hyderabad. The city as well as erstwhile Nalgo-nda district was depen-dent heavily on the Krishna.

The KRMB also directed both the States to maintain minimum water level of 510 ft at Nagarjunasagar till end of May.

TS argued that it would not be possible to maintain that level if it got lower allocations as it had to meet drinking and irrigation needs.
