The service of these students will be available until they reach the Class 9.

Kollam: Following the success of student police cadets, ‘student doctors’ are getting ready. They will get hands-on experience in giving first aid and other lifesaving procedures to handle emergency situations. Kollam district panchayat is implementing the project named Kutti Doctor with the help of health and education departments. The children will also promote a healthy lifestyle. In the first phase, 20 students from 16 schools, half of them girls, will get trained. All of them are Class 8 students. They also have two teachers as nodal officers.

They can conduct preliminary health check-ups and provide first aid including artificial respiration. They will also conduct health awareness classes for other students. The service of these students will be available until they reach the Class 9.

“This project will help them intervene in health issues of their age group," district panchayat secretary K. Prasad told DC. "It also develops a passion for healthcare as a profession.” As part of the programme, schools will promote physical exercise at least half for an hour and teenage health awareness. It will take care of their mental and physical health, behavioural disabilities and bad habits, apart from yoga training.
