Tirunelveli: Four killed, Six injured in fire at cracker factory

Two of the injured are said to be in critical state at the hospital.

Tirunelveli: At least four persons including three women workers were charred to death in a fire accident at a firecracker manufacturing unit bordering Virudhunagar in Tirunelveli district.

Accidental blast in a small fire cracker unit owned by Ayyasamy of Vembakottai at Varahanoor in the Thiruvengadam police station limit in Tirunelveli district killed four workers-Kasthuri (45), Neethiraj (45), Mariammal (48) and Krishnammal.

The accident reported to have occurred at around 2 pm on Friday too injured six others, who are undergoing treatment at government hospitals at Sivakasi, Kovilpatti and Tirunelveli.

Two of the injured are said to be in critical state at the hospital. The bodies of the deceased have been sent to Tirunelveli medical college hospital for autopsy, according to Tamil Nadu state minister for information and publicity, Kadambur C Raju, who rushed to the spot along with the Tirunelveli district collector, Shilpa.

Prabakar Sateesh, South zone IG, Shanmugarajesw-aran, Tirunelveli range DIG, Kapil Kumar Saratkar and district SPs' of Tirunelveli and Virudhunagar.

Fire tenders from Kovilpatti, Sivakasi and Virudhunagar rushed to the accident spot and doused the fire in time saving 30 others working in the factory at the time of the accident.
