LDF starts counter campaign on murders

The chief minister accused the Congress of remaining silent and encouraging criminals in Kasargod.

Thiruvananthapuram: After remaining on the defensive for a brief period, the CPM has now launched a counter campaign on the murders of Youth Congress leaders in Kasargod.

The strategy is to go on the offensive against the Congress plan to run an aggressive campaign on the issue during the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan during his visit to Kasargod on Friday echoed the sentiments expressed by CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balkrishna earlier.

He termed the murders heinous and highly condemnable and reiterated that the party would not take the responsibility of people indulging in such mindless and irresponsible criminal acts.

By shifting the entire blame on the local leaders, the CPM is making a desperate bid to insulate rest of the party and government from the horrific murders. And with the UDF mounting direct attack on the CPM and KPCC president Muallapally Ramchandan even raising personal allegations against Pinarayi, the party leadership believes there is no point in going on the defensive at this stage.

The chief minister accused the Congress of remaining silent and encouraging criminals in Kasargod.

Kunhiraman alleged that Sarath Lal was a criminal used by Youth Congress and Congress for carrying out criminal activities in the area and termed Kalliyot as ‘land of Congress criminals.’

Fearing that the media might continue offensive campaign against CPM on Kasargod murders of the scale that was witnessed after the killings of T. P. Chandrashekharan and Shuhaib, the party wants to get the chapter closed at the earliest.

LDF convenor A. Vijayaraghavan said Kasargod killings were retaliation planned at the local level against the series of attacks carried out by Congress and youth Congress. He said the CPM did not approve of the killings.

However, the LDF would counter the propaganda of the Congress and a section of media. With the police claiming that all the accused involved in the twin murders have been arrested, the CPM wants to move on.
