BEL's thermal CCTVs: Heat is on thieves

These cameras will be part of the Smart City project kicked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in over 100 cities.

Bengaluru: The police depend on CCTV cameras to solve crimes, especially those that occur in the night. But these cameras require a good amount of light to capture decent images. Scientists at Bharath Electronics Ltd have designed a 'thermal camera' which can operate even in the dark or 'zero-light conditions'.

A BEL official, who did not wish to be named, said, "Traditional CCTV cameras will help only during the day as they need adequate light. They will only help in perimeter protection. But thermal cameras, which use the 'heat' emitted from the human body, will help round the clock."

These cameras will be part of the Smart City project kicked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in over 100 cities. He said that they have already received orders from many cities as part of the Smart City project. He said that the camera will capture not only the image of the human body, but also images of animals, vehicles, equipment and aircraft.

“These thermal cameras are sensitive to heat and do not need light. The data collected from these cameras, with the help of data analytics, can be shared with the police department to help them tackle crimes that occur in the night,” he said.

“Traditional CCTVs do not raise any alarm and have to be monitored continuously, which many a time does not happen. But with the help of thermal cameras and its video analytics, warnings can be immediately sent to the police or the fire department,” he said.
