Top leaders prefer to stay off Shuhaib murder debate

However, Kannur district secretary P. Jayarajan had said that party should conduct a probe.

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has reiterated that his party had no role in the murder of Youth Congress leader Shuhaib Edayannur . The state secretary made this clear again while presenting the organisational report before the state conference at Thrissur. He said if the involvement of CPM workers is proved, then strict action would be taken against them. Meanwhile, serious differences have surfaced in CPM over Shuhaib’s murder with the district and state leadership taking divergent positions.

The chief minister has already conveyed his displeasure to Jayarajan over his stand on the issue and for casting aspersions on the ongoing police probe into the incident. The national leadership too has distanced itself from the murder. Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury had earlier told the conference that the party did not believe in violence. However, in case of aberration corrective measures would be taken.

CPM state secretary has also expressed his annoyance over Jayarajan’s statement that the party was currently conducting an internal probe into the murder incident. He sought to correct Jayarajan saying that it was not the duty of CPM to conduct investigations into such cases. While Jayarajan has stood with the party workers in the district despite serious allegations related to politics of murder, the state leadership is keen to initiate disciplinary action against those involved in the gruesome murder. The state leadership is understood to have told Jayarajan that those involved should be either suspended or expelled from the party after the state conference gets over.
