NHRC seeks action-taken reports from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh

The NHRC granted four weeks to both state authorities to file the reports.

HYDERABAD: The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Chief Secretaries of AP and Telangana to submit action-taken reports (ATRs) on the suicides of students in private corporate colleges of both states. The Commission had sought the action-reports from both states following a complaint from Mr K. Sravan Kumar a practicing advocate of Supreme Court who is seeking to direct the authorities concerned of both states to take action against the private college managements for their negligence in protecting the lives of the students.

He complained that the authorities are afraid to take action against the managements as powerful political lobbies including a Cabinet Minister in AP are running the scores of junior colleges in both States despite the fact that there have been several cases of students committing suicides. The NHRC granted four weeks to both state authorities to file the reports.
