Bengaluru: Ever since the Mohammed Nalapad Haris case started to unfold with the alleged thrashing of a 24- year- old Bengalurean, Vidwath, at UB City Saturday night, fingers have been pointed at the police for botching things up. The courtroom drama that followed and the alleged threats received by Vidwath’s counsel, M S Shyamsundar, have only made the entire episode murkier. The advocate speaks to the Deccan Chronicle about this and more.
“We presented a lengthy argument before the lower court on Thursday emphasising that we should be heard before it passes order on the bail applications of the accused. We have referred to several judgements of the Supreme Court related to this issue. The victim, who will have to face the consequences, must be heard in a case like this,” he said.
Referring to his decision to approach city police commissioner, T Suneel Kumar seeking protection for his family and himself, he said, “I have been facing threats ever since I started arguing for Vidwath. I have received several calls and so I met the police commissioner on Thursday and requested him to provide me security. I have been assured that directions will be given to the police officials concerned."
Mr Shyamsundar claimed this was nothing but an attempt to suppress the voice of the victim as the entire media and the public at large was against the actions of the MLA’s son.
In his view, the other side believes the victim is being strongly represented in court and is afraid that with elections round the corner it will be difficult for it to face the public without getting any relief from the court at this stage. “This is where the state government has to stand by the victim. If it fails to do so, it will show nepotism,” he contended.
