Bengaluru: Amid steel flyover debate, Ballari Road to be widened

The project was cleared way back in 2008, but had not taken off.

Bengaluru: While the proposed steel bridge project to ease traffic on Ballari road is mired with controversy, the Karnataka Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the revised estimate for widening the Ballari road between Windsor Manor and Hebbal flyover.

The project was cleared way back in 2008, but had not taken off. At that time, the project cost to widen the two-kilometre stretch was estimated to be Rs 14.43 crore. It has now been revised to Rs 27.52 crore.

After the Cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra told reporters that the land acquisition and other process had been already completed. It was not even clear if the trees are going to be cut to widen the existing road.

As for the proposed steel flyover project, Mr Jayachandra said the cabinet did not discuss it since the work is yet to begin.

Treated water for tanks
The Cabinet also approved a project to fill treated sewerage water from Hebbal-Nagavara valley to 65 lakes and tanks in Chickaballapura and Bengaluru districts.

Mr Jayachandra said the tender process would begin soon. At the same time, the Cabinet would also give administrative approval for executing 359 works in nine packages under Vrishabhavathi, Hebbala, Koramangala and Chellaghatta valley to develop sewerage lines for forthcoming monsoon, at a cost of Rs 671 crore.

The Cabinet also gave consent for providing government surety for 'Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board' to raise Rs 165-crore loan from Union Bank of India to execute 12 water supply and five sewerage projects.
