Postal department to offer accident cover to Chennai auto drivers
Chennai: Looking to boost postal revenue and protect auto drivers in the city under the Prime Ministers’ accident insurance scheme, the postal department is in the process of offering the benefit of Prime Minister’s Suraksha Bima Yojana to 75,000 auto drivers in the city.
The accident scheme will enable the family of auto drivers to avail up to Rs 2 lakh under a premium of Rs 12 per annum in case of accidental death.
“As a part of this initiative, over 100 auto drivers joined the scheme for which one needs Rs 50 as base account. We want more people to join this scheme in the days to come,” said Mervin Alexander, Post Master General, Chennai region, on Monday during the eve of dedicating the ninth ATM in Chennai at the Park town head office.
“The ATM facility will be currently available for postal savings bank account holders and in a span of six months inter-banking access facility will also be place”, he told DC.
Postal department has also decided to activate an online savings bank account for account holders where the transactions can be made online.
“Once the process, which is on an experimental basis, is made online and open to the public, people need not come for certain transactions that can be done exclusively online,” said K. Raveendran, senior superintendent, Chennai region.
At present there are 54 postal ATMs in Chennai, the maximum in any state in the country and 445 ATMs across the country. The postal department has decided to install 94 ATMs across Tamil Nadu by the end of March.
