Novel protest to end traffic crisis at Kundanoor

The bridge contains two bus stops - North Colony and Kallath.

Kochi: Over 100 volunteers were assembled on both sides of two bus-stops along the nearly 1.5 km long Kundanoor-Thevara bridge, helping commuters cross the ‘dangerous’ stretch.

The novel protest by local residents of Kundanoor-Netoor region on Monday morning was against the ‘negligent attitude’ of the authorities to take safety measures to curb increasing mishaps along the stretch.

“The bridge contains two bus stops - North Colony and Kallath. However, the bus stops and the staircase from the ground underneath the flyover are only on one side. Hundreds of students and office-goers are forced to cross the straight stretch where vehicles ply at a high speed every day. For long we have been demanding stairs on the other side of the bus stops,” rued Joshi Kalarikkal, Secretary, Avani Purusha Swayam Sahaya Sangham, which held the protest at 7 am.

When contacted, a senior official of the PWD said they had submitted a project that included the construction of a staircase at the other end besides marking pedestrian crossings, to the Centre for its consideration.
