The complainant told the police that the duo began chatting with each other quite frequently and that Rakesh eventually proposed.

Bengaluru: R.R. Nagar police is on the lookout for a man who allegedly duped a woman doctor based in Bengaluru. Posing as a doctor living in Venezuela, the suspect, Rakesh Kapoor, reached out to her with a marriage proposal, ultimately duping her of Rs 21.4 lakh.

The 36-year-old victim, who works at a private hospital, said she came in contact with the suspect through the internet in October last year, on an online matrimony site. Rakesh claimed he was an NRI working as a doctor at St. Anthony hospital in Venezuela.

She liked his profile and shared her contact details.

The complainant told the police that the duo began chatting with each other quite frequently and that Rakesh eventually proposed.

Rakesh then told her of his plans to visit Delhi in November 2018, allegedly to purchase medical equipment. He promised to fly to Bengaluru and meet her in person to formalise the proposal.

A few days later, however, he called the victim and told her that he had ordered medical equipment worth Rs 50 lakh but that the company demanded an advance of 10 percent.

He told her that due to a problem with his accounts, he was unable to transfer the money to the firm. He asked her to send him the sum, promising to return it when he visited her.

The complainant transferred the money to the firm, which was allegedly based in Delhi.

However, Rakesh continued to transfer his visit to India.

In the end, he told her that his contract in Venezuela had been extended and that he would be unable to make it. Meanwhile, he requested her to make more transfers to other accounts, promising to return all of it. By the end, the doctor had transferred all her savings to her alleged fiancé.

After taking Rs 21.4lakh from her, Rakesh switched off his mobile and he was not reachable. Victim made various attempts to contact him and realised finally that she had been duped. She filed a police complaint on Monday.
