Chennai: DVAC raids house of senior police officer

Sources said the raids were conducted on a tip-off that unaccounted money is kept in his house.

Chennai: The sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) carried out a raid at the house of former assistant commissioner of police C. S. Muthalagu at Anna Nagar police quarters following the allegation of corruption and bribery.

Muthalagu came under controversy after a WhatsApp audio began doing rounds on social media where he was allegedly asking for a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from an accused in a kidnap case. After initial probe, Muthalagu, then serving as in charge of Teynampet range, was transferred to the vacancy reserve. He was later transferred as assistant commandant, Tamil Nadu Special Police.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, a special team of vigilance officials conducted a surprise raid at his apartment in the Anna Nagar police quarters. Sources said the raids were conducted on a tip-off that unaccounted money is kept in his house.

C.S. Muthalagu was assigned to handle the investigation of the kidnap of Karthik Sethupathi, the adopted heir of Vijaya Nachiar, elder daughter of Ramnad zamindar Shanmuga Sethupathi.

He was kidnapped to Tirunelveli by a gang and tortured there. The gang released Karthik after usurping properties worth Rs 33 crore. However, The police on May 7, arrested four persons, including ‘Rocket’ Raja in connection with the case from a from a luxurious hotel in Teynampet.

Muthalagu was allegedly speaking over the phone to Prakash, the brother of prime accused Sundar, demanding a bribe of Rs 20 lakh to remove the names of Sundar and Prakash. the Three audio tapes were released, However, Muthalagu has denied that it was his voice.
